River surfaces: reflections are not a depth chart

Observe the image without asking it to answer questions it cannot resolve.

Name the visible pattern

Look for changes of light, reflections and the meeting of water and bank. Write only what you can see. Surface appearance does not establish depth, flow throughout the channel or a safe place to stand. Those questions require appropriate current information and actual assessment.

Keep the frame’s limits

A cropped photograph may hide most of the surroundings. Do not extend the view into an imagined route. If you use several pictures, confirm their sources and known locations. Similar-looking water is not evidence that the photographs document the same place.

One question for reading

Choose a topic that would improve your understanding and save a suitable source. A field note can remain unfinished. Its value is in clear observation and honest limits rather than a confident explanation built from a single attractive reflection.
